Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. alternans Leach, 1815 (Kraepelin 1903; Brölemann 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a; Shelley 2002); I confirm this synonymy.

Remarks: Newport (1845) renamed this species as “ S. multispinosa, ” referencing his previous account of S. multispinata, and S. multispinosa has been cited in most subsequent works. However, the official name is the original one, multispinata, which was omitted by Bücherl (1974).
