Holotype: not known to exist, not present at the ZIN (S. I. Golovatch & A. A. Schileyko, pers comm.), not listed in Moritz & Fischer (1979) as being at the ZMB); type locality: Havanna, Cuba .

Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. morsitans L., 1758 (Kohlrausch 1878, 1879, 1881; Haase 1887; Kraepelin 1903; Brölemann 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1942 a).

Distribution: Brandt (1840) cited an additional specimen from Hispaniola, and Saussure & Humbert (1872) recorded S. platypus from Venezuela.

Remarks: This name was omitted by Bücherl (1974).
