Lectotype (Fernald in Rhodora 43: 580. 1941; Clewell in Brittonia 16: 75. 1964): Clayton 510, Herb. Linn. No. 921.39 (LINN; iso- BM) .

Current name: Lespedeza hirta (L.) Hornem. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).

Note: Britton (in Trans. New York Acad. Sci. 12: 66. 1893) discussed both Clayton and Kalm collections, and Fernald (in Rhodora 43: 580. 1941) evidently regarded Clayton material as the type, though without distinguishing between the sheets in LINN and BM. They carry the same Clayton number and appear to have been part of a single gathering (Art. 9.15), so Fernald is accepted as having typified the name, with a subsequent restriction to the sheet in LINN being made by Clewell.
