Cycloramphus boulengeri A. Lutz, 1929

Cyclorhamphus [sic] boulengeri A. Lutz, 1929: 11, pl. 3, figs. 1–2— nomen novum for Telmatobius asper Boulenger, 1907 .

Cycloramphus boulengeri — Bokermann 1951: 82.

Current name. Cycloramphus asper Werner, 1899 — Bokermann 1951: 82.

Synonymy. Currently a junior synonym of Cycloramphus asper Werner, 1899 (Bokermann 1951: 82; Heyer 1983: 289). This is a replacement name for Telmatobius asper Boulenger, 1907, preoccupied by Cycloramphus asper Werner, 1899 .

Remarks. Bokermann (1966: 31) stated that the specimen AL-MN “1972” (lapsus pro 1792) was labeled as “Tipo” (“ Type ”) of Cycloramphus boulengeri, from “S„o Bento do Sul”, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. However, Bokermann (1966: 31) correctly pointed out that, since C. boulengeri was a replacement name for Telmatobius asper Boulenger, 1907, the type specimen for C. boulengeri is the same as for C. asper (BMNH 1947.2.15.48; see Heyer 1983: 289), described by Boulenger (1907) (see Art. 72.7of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, ICZN 1999). Consequently, the specimen AL-MN 1792 is not a type.

In the AL-MN collection are five specimens referred by A. Lutz (1929): AL-MN 1792, labeled “‘Tipo’ C. boulengeri . Sta. Catarina, Serra de S„o Bento, leg. Ehrhardt, 1929.” [“ leg. ” is an old notation derived from Latin “ legatum ” in the sense of legacy, bequest, or endowment]. AL-MN 1793–1794 “‘ Tipos’ Sta. Catarina. Serra de S„o Bento. Leg. Ehrhardt 1929”. AL-MN 1795–1796, labeled “Cotypos. Santa Catarina, Hansa, leg. Ehrhardt, Fev. 1929 ”. These specimens are not types and were reidentified as Cycloramphus duseni (Andersson, 1914) by Heyer (1983: 304).

Additionally, Cochran (1961: 40) referred to “ Cyclorhamphus boulengeri Lutz ” “Cotypes (3): 97179-81, S„o Bento, Santa Catarina, Brazil, A. Lutz, 1929.” among the type specimens housed at the USNM.

Actually, all these specimens were not considered types by A. Lutz (1929), who only stated that “todos os meus exemplares s„o da Serra de S. Bento no mesmo estado de Santa Catharina, mas de outro lugar que os de Boulenger” (in free translation, “all my specimens are from the S. Bento range in the same state of Santa Catharina, but from other site than that of Boulenger”).

Telmatobius asper Boulenger, 1907 was synonymized with Cycloramphus asper Werner, 1899 by Miranda-Ribeiro (1926: 201), confirmed by Miranda-Ribeiro (1929: 15), Bokermann (1951: 82; 1966: 31), and Heyer (1983: 289). Cyclorhamphus boulengeri A. Lutz, 1929, a replacement name for Telmatobius asper Boulenger, 1907, was synonymized with Cycloramphus asper Werner, 1899 by Bokermann (1951: 82), followed by Bokermann (1966: 31) and Heyer (1983: 289).

Anteriorly, A. Lutz (1928: 640) had proposed another new name, Cyclorhamphus [sic] neglectus, as substitute for Telmatobius asper Boulenger, 1907 . Both new names, Cycloramphus neglectus A. Lutz, 1928 and Cycloramphus boulengeri A. Lutz, 1929, were synonymized with Cycloramphus asper Werner, 1899 by Heyer (1983: 289).
